Plot Summary
In a picturesque Bavarian village nestled among the Alpine foothills, schoolteacher Karl Roder (Douglass Montgomery) dreams of a career as a songwriter. When he composes what he believes is a beautiful melody, he and his loyal sweetheart Sieglinde (June Lang) travel to the bustling city of Munich to sell the song to a music publisher, accompanied by Sieglinde’s kindly father, Dr. Lessing (Al Shean), the village music teacher. In Munich, they stumble into the glittering but treacherous world of professional theater and fall in with Bruno Mahler (John Boles), a famous and sophisticated opera librettist, and his temperamental leading lady and lover, the glamorous prima donna Frieda Hotzfelt (Gloria Swanson).
Bruno and Frieda are in the midst of one of their frequent dramatic quarrels when the naive country visitors arrive, and the two theater people immediately see an opportunity for romantic mischief. Bruno becomes infatuated with the innocent, fresh-faced Sieglinde and decides she has the perfect quality to become a new star, offering to train her for the stage and subtly pulling her away from Karl. Frieda, furious at Bruno’s wandering eye and determined to prove she is irreplaceable, retaliates by lavishing flattering attention on the naive Karl, making him believe she is genuinely taken with his talent and his charm. The romantic entanglements spiral into increasingly comedic complications as the sophisticated, backstabbing theater world collides with the couple’s wholesome small-town simplicity. As rehearsals proceed amid rivalries, jealousy, and mounting confusion, the village innocents gradually discover that Munich’s glamour hides selfishness and manipulation, and both couples must ultimately discover where their true affections lie. This classic movie blends Jerome Kern’s beautiful melodies with sparkling romantic comedy set against the backdrop of 1930s European theater.

The original black and white photography captured the musical numbers and romantic settings beautifully, but the professionally colorized restoration brings out the lush green Alpine meadows and wildflower-dotted hillsides of the Bavarian countryside, the rich red curtains and gilded ornamental details of the Munich opera house, Gloria Swanson’s glamorous silk gowns and fur stoles, the warm wood-paneled interiors of the village inn, and the sparkling chandeliers of the theater district with frame-by-frame precision. Historical Significance
Music in the Air was one of the last major leading roles for Gloria Swanson before her long hiatus from Hollywood, showcasing her remarkable gift for comedy and her still-commanding screen presence just two decades before her legendary comeback in Sunset Boulevard. The film features some of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II’s most enduring songs, including “I’ve Told Ev’ry Little Star” — which became a massive hit when re-recorded in the 1960s — and the timeless standard “The Song Is You,” now considered one of the greatest American popular songs ever written. Director Joe May, a pioneering German filmmaker who fled the Nazis, brought an authentic European sensibility to the Bavarian settings and theatrical milieu. The film also features an early screen appearance by Marjorie Main, who would later become famous as Ma Kettle. The film represents a fascinating snapshot of pre-war European culture as imagined by Hollywood during the twilight of the pre-Code era. The colorization brings new visual splendor to this rarely seen musical gem.
