Plot Summary

In 1933, as Adolf Hitler rises to power in Germany, a crowded German ocean liner departs Veracruz, Mexico, bound for the port of Bremerhaven, carrying a microcosm of humanity on the brink of catastrophe that no one aboard can yet imagine. The ship becomes a floating world where social classes, nationalities, and ideologies collide in the confined spaces of decks and dining rooms during the long Atlantic crossing.

Among the passengers is Dr. Wilhelm Schumann, the ship’s melancholy German physician, a kind and principled man suffering from a failing heart who is irresistibly drawn to La Condesa, a beautiful but troubled Spanish political deportee addicted to tranquilizing drugs, being sent to exile on the prison island of Tenerife. Their doomed romance — he cannot save her, she cannot save herself — becomes the emotional heart of the voyage. Elsewhere on board, a bitter and cynical American artist named David and his frustrated companion Jenny engage in a passionate relationship that is as creatively destructive as it is emotionally addictive, unable to live together or apart. A pompous, self-important German industrialist named Rieber spews anti-Semitic venom with casual confidence at every dinner table, while a dignified Jewish merchant named Lowenthal responds to each humiliation with quiet, devastating dignity and the patience of centuries of persecution.

Mary Treadwell, a fading Southern belle traveling alone, clings desperately to the last remnants of her beauty and youthful charm while drowning her loneliness in alcohol, her brittle elegance hiding a well of fury that will eventually explode in one of the film’s most shocking scenes. Below decks, hundreds of impoverished Spanish sugar workers are herded in steerage like cattle, their suffering invisible to the first-class passengers who dine and dance mere feet above them. A pair of conniving German teenagers wreaks havoc with casual cruelty. As the ship crosses the Atlantic toward a Germany that is already changing into something monstrous, alliances form and shatter, love affairs ignite and die, secrets are confided and betrayed, and each passenger acts out their private drama of desire, prejudice, and self-deception against the vast, indifferent ocean.
