Plot Summary
Glenda O’Brien (Nancy Carroll) is a beautiful and sophisticated socialite whose seemingly perfect life conceals a dark secret from her past. When Leo Young (Louis Calhern), a manipulative former lover, threatens to reveal their illicit former relationship to her fiancΓ©, Glenda faces ruin. In a moment of desperate panic, she confronts Leo at his apartment and kills him, staging the scene to look like a burglary gone wrong.
Shaken but determined to escape suspicion, Glenda joins her unsuspecting fiancΓ© Stephen Doyle-Doyle (Cary Grant) on a luxury ocean cruise. On board the ship, Glenda struggles to maintain her composure while haunted by the knowledge of what she has done. The confined world of the cruise ship becomes a pressure cooker of anxiety as Glenda must interact socially with other passengers while concealing her mounting fear that the murder will be discovered and traced back to her.
Complicating matters enormously, a sharp-eyed district attorney is among the passengers, and his professional instincts are aroused by Glenda’s barely concealed nervousness and the inconsistencies in her behaviour. Meanwhile, Stephen, who genuinely loves Glenda, begins to notice that something is deeply wrong with his fiancΓ©e but cannot imagine the true nature of her distress. As the cruise progresses and evidence of the murder begins to surface back on shore, the noose tightens around Glenda. She finds herself trapped on a ship with nowhere to flee, surrounded by suspicious eyes, and unable to confide in the one person who might help her β Stephen, whose love she will certainly lose if the truth comes out. The film builds to a dramatic courtroom conclusion in which Glenda must face the consequences of her desperate act, and the question of whether her crime was premeditated murder or justified self-defence against a predatory blackmailer becomes the central moral dilemma that determines her fate.
