Plot Summary

In the final days of Tsarist Russia, Baron Dobrinsky lives a life of extraordinary privilege and casual decadence. His magnificent estate is a world of endless parties, beautiful women, and the effortless comfort that comes from generations of unchallenged wealth and power. He takes everything for granted — including the adoration of Tanya, a lovely servant girl who loves him with a devotion he barely notices.

When the Bolshevik Revolution tears through Russia like a firestorm, Dobrinsky’s entire world collapses overnight. His family’s wealth is confiscated, his estates are seized, and the social order that placed him at the top of an entire civilization is violently overturned. He barely escapes with his life, fleeing Russia with nothing but the clothes on his back and the shattered remnants of his aristocratic pride.

Tanya, driven by her fierce love for the Baron, follows him into exile in Constantinople, where the former Russian aristocrats have gathered in a miserable community of displaced grandeur. Once-powerful nobles now drive taxis, work as waiters, and sell their remaining jewels to survive another week. Dobrinsky, utterly unprepared for a life without servants and luxury, sinks into bitter self-pity and resentment.

Tanya becomes his wife, hoping that her devotion will sustain him through this crisis, but Dobrinsky treats her with the same casual disregard he always showed her — only now, stripped of his wealth and position, his selfishness and arrogance are laid bare without the gilding of privilege to make them tolerable. As their circumstances grow more desperate and Tanya’s patience is pushed to its limits, Dobrinsky must finally confront the man he has become and decide whether he has the courage to rebuild himself from nothing or whether he will surrender to the bitterness that threatens to consume him entirely.
