Plot Summary

In the picturesque Scottish village of Thrums in the 1840s, young Gavin Dishart (John Beal) arrives as the new minister of the Auld Licht Kirk — the strict, stern Protestant congregation that rules the community’s moral life with unbending authority. Gavin is earnest, devout, and utterly unprepared for what awaits him. He is ‘the little minister,’ small in stature but large in determination to live up to the solemn responsibilities of his calling and the expectations of his demanding flock.

His orderly world is thrown into glorious chaos when he encounters the beautiful, wild, and completely ungovernable Lady Babbie (Katharine Hepburn), who appears to be a Romani gypsy roaming the Scottish hills with reckless freedom. Babbie is everything Gavin’s congregation disapproves of — passionate, irreverent, untamed, and intoxicatingly alive. Despite his best efforts to resist, Gavin falls hopelessly and helplessly in love with her, risking his reputation, his position, and the wrath of his entire congregation.

But Babbie harbours a secret far bigger than anyone suspects. She is not a gypsy at all but the ward of the local aristocrat Lord Dodd Dodd Rintoul (Frank Conroy), engaged to marry him in an arranged union she despises. Her gypsy disguise allows her to escape the suffocating constraints of her privileged life and secretly aid the local weavers in their desperate labour disputes against the mill owners. When the weavers’ revolt erupts into open confrontation with soldiers, Gavin and Babbie are drawn together in the crisis — and the final revelation of Babbie’s true identity threatens to destroy both their love and Gavin’s ministry. Through mistaken identities, secret marriages, dramatic confrontations, and the intervention of the most fearsome elders in Scotland, the story weaves toward a joyous romantic resolution.

Historical Significance

Released in 1934 by RKO Pictures, The Little Minister was based on J.M. Barrie’s 1891 novel and hugely successful 1897 stage play — the same author who created Peter Pan. It was one of RKO’s premier productions designed to showcase Katharine Hepburn during her early Hollywood ascent, and though the film was a modest commercial disappointment during a difficult period in Hepburn’s career, her enchanting performance has been increasingly appreciated by modern audiences and critics. Through colorization, this charming Victorian romance is preserved for modern audiences.
