Plot Summary
Jed Towers (Richard Widmark), a cynical airline pilot, is spending the night at a New York hotel when he spots a beautiful young woman, Nell Forbes (Marilyn Monroe), across the hotel courtyard. Nell has just been hired as a babysitter for a couple staying in one of the suites. Jed strikes up a flirtation, but he quickly realizes that something is terribly wrong — Nell is deeply disturbed, her fragile mind still reeling from the wartime death of a beloved boyfriend. As the evening grows increasingly dangerous, particularly for young Bunny (Donna Corcoran), the child left in Nell’s care, Jed faces an agonizing choice between self-preservation and moral responsibility. Downstairs in the hotel bar, Lyn Lesley (Anne Bancroft), a lounge singer and Jed’s estranged girlfriend, wrestles with her own feelings as the nightmare above the lobby spirals toward a chilling and unexpected climax.
Cast & Crew
Directed by Roy Ward Baker, Don’t Bother to Knock features Richard Widmark in a controlled, morally ambiguous performance as Jed Towers. Marilyn Monroe delivers a genuinely unsettling and deeply sympathetic turn as the fragile, psychologically fractured Nell — demonstrating dramatic range that surprised contemporary audiences and critics alike. Anne Bancroft makes an impressive screen debut as the perceptive and sympathetic Lyn, while young Donna Corcoran provides real tension as the imperiled child Bunny. Elisha Cook Jr. and Jim Backus provide strong supporting work in key hotel roles.
