Plot Summary
Guy Van Stratten (Robert Arden), a small-time smuggler working the waterfront in Naples, stumbles onto a dying man’s whispered secret — the name Gregory Arkadin. Intrigued by the potential for profit, Van Stratten tracks down Arkadin (Orson Welles), one of the world’s wealthiest and most powerful men, who lives in a vast, ornate castle perched high above the Spanish countryside with his sheltered and innocent daughter Raina (Paola Mori). Arkadin claims to suffer from complete amnesia — he cannot remember anything before waking in a Zurich alley in 1927 with two hundred thousand Swiss francs in his pocket — and hires Van Stratten to investigate his own past, ostensibly to discover whether any dark secrets might threaten Raina’s happiness.
As Van Stratten travels across Europe and Mexico interviewing a colorful and eccentric gallery of characters from Arkadin’s forgotten life — including a flea circus trainer in Copenhagen, a fence in Amsterdam, a former associate in a Munich beer hall, and a mysterious woman in Mexico City — he discovers that each person he visits soon turns up dead under suspicious circumstances. The investigation gradually reveals a dark criminal history involving white slavery, drug trafficking, and murder that Arkadin will stop at nothing to keep buried from his daughter. Van Stratten realizes with growing horror that his employer is systematically eliminating everyone who knew his past, and that his own name may be last on the list. A desperate race against time ensues as Van Stratten scrambles to stay alive long enough to expose the truth. This classic movie weaves a complex web of deception, power, and murder across multiple countries in Welles’s signature expressionistic style.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
This colorized version of Mr. Arkadin reveals the European locations, the ornate castle interiors, and the masked ball sequences with stunning new visual depth. The original black and white cinematography captured Welles’s dramatic Dutch angles, deep-focus compositions, and moody lighting brilliantly, creating a visual language that echoed and expanded upon his work in The Third Man and Citizen Kane. The professionally colorized restoration brings out the sun-drenched Mediterranean landscapes of Spain and Italy, the cold grey canals of Amsterdam, the opulent tapestries and gilded furnishings of Arkadin’s castle, and the elaborate costumes of the iconic masked ball sequence where grotesque carnival masks fill the screen. Every frame has been enhanced with careful attention to period detail, ensuring that the 1950s European settings glow with authentic color. Historical Significance
Mr. Arkadin, also known as Confidential Report, is considered one of Orson Welles’s most underrated and fascinating works. Often compared to Citizen Kane for its fractured narrative structure and investigation into a powerful man’s hidden past, the film was shot across multiple European locations with Welles’s characteristic visual flair and audacious storytelling. Welles financed much of the production himself during his self-imposed European exile, shooting in Spain, France, Germany, and Italy on a shoestring budget that belied the film’s epic ambitions. The production was troubled — Welles lost control of the final edit, and multiple versions of the film exist, each with different cuts and arrangements of scenes. Despite these difficulties, Mr. Arkadin showcases Welles’s undiminished genius for creating atmosphere, suspense, and unforgettable character portraits, with standout performances from Michael Redgrave and Akim Tamiroff in small but memorable roles. The colorization brings new appreciation to Welles’s inventive camera work and the film’s evocative European settings.
