Plot Summary

Roma Donskoy is a wealthy and beautiful young socialite devastated by the recent death of her beloved twin brother. In her grief, she becomes the target of Paul Barvon, a charming and unscrupulous fake medium who makes his living by preying on the bereaved, using elaborate tricks and psychological manipulation to convince vulnerable people that he can communicate with their departed loved ones.

Barvon’s scheme to swindle Roma of her fortune proceeds smoothly until genuine supernatural forces intervene. A brilliant psychiatrist, Dr. Houston, has been conducting experiments with the body of a recently executed murderess, Ruth Rogen, attempting to prove his theory that the spirit of the dead can influence the living. His research unwittingly opens a doorway between the worlds of the living and the dead.

Roma becomes the vessel for a vengeful supernatural force when she attends one of Barvon’s fraudulent séances. The spirit that enters her is not the gentle presence of her brother but something far more dangerous — the malevolent ghost of the executed murderess, who has her own terrible agenda.
