Plot Summary

Joe Krozac (Edward G. Robinson), a powerful and feared European-born crime boss ruling the American underworld, returns from a trip to his homeland with a beautiful, innocent young bride named Talya (Rose Stradner). Talya has no idea about her husband’s true profession — she believes him to be a successful businessman. When she gives birth to a baby boy, Joe’s obsession with the child is immediate and absolute: this son will carry on his empire and his name. He names the boy Joe Junior and regards him as his dynasty, his immortality, his everything.

But Krozac’s world collapses when he is arrested for tax evasion and sentenced to ten years in Alcatraz. Behind bars, Krozac endures savage beatings from rival gangsters who want the location of a hidden $500,000 stash, but his ruthless will and granite determination keep him alive. Meanwhile, on the outside, Talya — horrified to learn the truth about her husband’s criminal life — divorces Krozac, changes her name, and marries Paul North (James Stewart), a kind, decent newspaper reporter. Together, they raise little Joe Junior in a loving, respectable home, giving the boy the wholesome life that Krozac’s criminal world could never provide.

When Krozac is finally released after a decade in prison, he emerges into a world that has utterly forgotten him. His gang has been destroyed, his territory taken over, and — most devastatingly — his beloved son doesn’t know him and calls another man ‘Father.’ Consumed by rage and bitter jealousy, Krozac kidnaps his own son, triggering a desperate search and a harrowing final confrontation. In the film’s powerful climax, the once-mighty gangster must make an agonizing choice between his obsessive desire for possession and his genuine love for the boy — choosing at last to let his son go free and live the decent, honest life that Krozac himself could never have.

Historical Significance

Released in 1937 by MGM, The Last Gangster represents a late entry in the classic gangster cycle that Edward G. Robinson had helped define with Little Caesar (1931). It was notable for its more psychologically complex, sympathetic portrayal of a gangster — emphasizing not just crime and punishment but the human cost to family and innocent lives. The film also features an early role for James Stewart, who would become one of Hollywood’s greatest leading men within two years. Through colorization, this emotionally powerful crime drama is preserved for modern audiences.
