Plot Summary

In the years following the Civil War, Colonel Lloyd, a proud and stubborn former Confederate officer, lives in bitter isolation on his once-grand Southern plantation, nursing his resentments against the North and especially against the Yankee businessman who married his daughter Elizabeth against his express wishes. The Colonel has disowned Elizabeth completely and refuses any contact with her or her family.

Elizabeth and her husband Jack Sherman have fallen on hard financial times and are forced to move back to the Southern town near the Colonel’s estate. Their young daughter, Lloyd Sherman — a precocious, spirited child with her grandfather’s temper and her mother’s sweetness — quickly becomes known around town for her feisty personality. Though she has never met her grandfather, the little girl shares many of his stubborn, proud characteristics.

When young Lloyd finally encounters the old Colonel, a battle of wills ensues between the irascible old man and the fearless little girl.
