Plot Summary
Young Alice is daydreaming on a lazy afternoon when she spots a White Rabbit in a waistcoat hurrying past, checking his pocket watch and muttering about being late. Curious and adventurous, Alice follows the Rabbit down his rabbit hole and tumbles into the extraordinary world of Wonderland, where nothing makes sense and everything is wonderfully, maddeningly impossible.
Alice’s journey through Wonderland brings her face to face with an unforgettable gallery of characters. She encounters the grinning Cheshire Cat, who appears and disappears at will and offers cryptic philosophical observations. She attends the maddest of tea parties hosted by the Mad Hatter and the March Hare, where the rules of logic and etiquette are gleefully abandoned. She meets the hookah-smoking Caterpillar who demands to know who she really is — a question she finds increasingly difficult to answer as Wonderland transforms her understanding of identity itself.
She grows and shrinks unpredictably, cries enough tears to create a sea, engages in an impossible croquet match using flamingos as mallets and hedgehogs as balls, listens to the Mock Turtle’s melancholy story, and navigates the absurd legal proceedings of a trial where the sentence comes before the verdict. Throughout it all, Alice maintains her British composure and common sense, providing a rational counterpoint to Wonderland’s magnificent lunacy.
The journey culminates with the terrifying Queen of Hearts, whose solution to every problem is beheading, and a chaotic trial that threatens to consume Alice herself before she finds the courage to challenge the nonsense and awaken from her extraordinary dream.

Historical Significance
The 1955 Alice in Wonderland represents the golden age of live American television at its most ambitious, when networks regularly mounted lavish productions of classic literary works with major stars. Adapting Carroll’s fantastical story for live television presented enormous technical challenges that the production team overcame with ingenuity and theatrical imagination. The broadcast drew an enormous audience and became one of the most fondly remembered television events of the decade.
