Directed by Clarence Brown, this lavish 20th Century Fox production stars Myrna Loy, Tyrone Power, and George Brent in a sweeping story of love, redemption, and catastrophe set in the fictional Indian city of Ranchipur, where a dissolute group of British colonials living in idle luxury are shaken to their foundations — literally and morally — when a devastating monsoon and earthquake destroy the city, forcing every character to reveal their true nature in the crucible of disaster. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Special Effects. Now available as an instant, DRM-free digital download for only €15.00.

Plot Summary

Ranchipur is a princely Indian city where a small community of British colonials lives in privileged idleness, sustained by India’s wealth while contributing nothing. Into this decadent world arrives Lady Edwina Doyle (Myrna Loy), a beautiful, cynical, morally jaded aristocrat trapped in a loveless marriage to the amiable but dull Tom Doyle (George Brent).

Edwina is immediately drawn to Major Rama Donat-Donatov (Tyrone Power), a brilliant, idealistic Indian doctor trained in Western medicine who has devoted his life to serving his people. Rama is everything the colonial parasites are not — purposeful, compassionate, and deeply committed to something larger than himself. Edwina pursues him with the sophisticated predatory skill she has perfected in London drawing rooms, but Rama is resistant, seeing through her cynicism to the emptiness beneath.

Then the rains come. A catastrophic monsoon triggers a devastating earthquake that destroys the city’s dam, flooding Ranchipur in a spectacular sequence of destruction. The disaster strips away every pretence and forces each character to reveal who they truly are. Edwina, confronted with genuine human suffering for the first time in her pampered life, volunteers to work alongside Rama in the plague-stricken hospital. The lazy, cynical, emotionally dead woman is transformed by the experience of caring for others into someone capable of genuine love and genuine sacrifice. Her redemption through service becomes the film’s emotional heart.

Cast & Crew

Director: Clarence Brown
Stars: Myrna Loy delivers one of her finest dramatic performances as Lady Edwina — her transformation from jaded sophisticate to selfless nurse is utterly convincing and deeply moving. Tyrone Power brings quiet dignity and intelligence to Major Rama, though the casting of a white actor as an Indian character reflects the regrettable standards of the era. George Brent is touchingly sympathetic as the neglected husband.
