Plot Summary
Wang Lung (Paul Muni), a humble Chinese farmer, takes as his bride the quiet, hardworking O-Lan (Luise Rainer), a former kitchen slave from the great house of Hwang. Their marriage begins humbly, working the land side by side, and O-Lan’s uncomplaining devotion and practical wisdom prove essential as they build their farm from a modest plot into a thriving estate. Together they endure backbreaking labor, the birth of their children, and the eternal rhythms of planting and harvest.
But nature and fate conspire against them. A devastating drought destroys their crops and triggers a famine that reduces the family to near-starvation. Forced to abandon their beloved land, Wang Lung and O-Lan join the desperate migration south to the city, where they beg for food and shelter in refugee camps. Just when all seems lost, a revolution sweeps through the city, and in the chaos, O-Lan seizes a sack of jewels that transforms the family’s fortunes overnight.
Returning to their land, Wang Lung uses the wealth to expand his holdings enormously, buying up the estates of the declining Hwang family. But prosperity brings corruption. Wang Lung grows vain, taking a beautiful young concubine named Lotus and neglecting the faithful O-Lan, who bore his children and saved his family through famine. He demands the pearls O-Lan had kept from the jewel sack — her only personal treasure — and gives them to Lotus, a devastating betrayal that breaks O-Lan’s heart without breaking her dignity.
The film climaxes with a spectacular locust plague that threatens to destroy everything Wang Lung has built. In a breathtaking sequence involving thousands of extras and groundbreaking special effects, the entire farming community battles the locust swarm. Through this crisis, Wang Lung rediscovers the bond with his land and the memory of O-Lan’s sacrifice.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Movie-Specific Questions
Q: Why is Luise Rainer’s performance considered one of the greatest ever?

Q: Is this film based on a true story?
A: It is based on Pearl S. Buck’s 1931 novel, which drew on her decades of experience living in China as the daughter of missionaries. Buck won the Pulitzer Prize for the novel and later the Nobel Prize for Literature, with The Good Earth considered her masterwork.
