Plot Summary

In 1861 Philadelphia, on the day of Delia Lovell’s (Miriam Hopkins) wedding to the wealthy, respectable Joe Ralston, Delia’s cousin Charlotte Lovell (Bette Davis) shares a devastating secret with her: Charlotte has had an affair with Clem Spender, a dashing Civil War soldier whom Delia herself once loved, and Charlotte is carrying Clem’s illegitimate child. Clem is killed in battle, and Charlotte gives birth to a daughter, Tina, whom she hides by establishing a nursery school for war orphans — concealing her own child among the foundlings.

Years later, Charlotte plans to marry Jim Ralston, a respectable man who will give Tina a legitimate name and home. But Delia, motivated by a complex mixture of jealousy, moral concern, and lingering resentment over Clem, reveals Charlotte’s secret to Jim, destroying the engagement. Charlotte is forced to move into Delia’s household, where Delia raises Tina as her own child while Charlotte, unable to reveal herself as Tina’s real mother, watches helplessly as her daughter grows up calling Delia ‘Mother’ and treating Charlotte as a stern, unloving spinster aunt — ‘the old maid.’

The decades pass with agonising cruelty. Charlotte sacrifices everything for Tina’s social respectability while Delia enjoys the girl’s love and gratitude. Charlotte grows bitter and hard, while Delia grows warmer in the sunshine of Tina’s devotion. When grown-up Tina (Jane Bryan) prepares for her own wedding, the final, devastating confrontation between the cousins forces both women to reckon with decades of deception, sacrifice, and the terrible question of what it truly means to be a mother.

Historical Significance

Released in 1939, The Old Maid is based on Zoe Akins’s Pulitzer Prize-winning dramatisation of Edith Wharton’s novella — literary pedigree that the film honours with intelligent, faithful adaptation. The Davis-Hopkins rivalry, both on and off screen, generates some of the most intensely acted scenes in 1930s cinema. The film’s unflinching examination of how society punishes women for sexual transgression while rewarding those who maintain respectable facades remains powerfully relevant. Through colorization, this emotionally shattering drama is preserved for modern audiences.
