Plot Summary
Young Heidi is an orphan who has been raised by her kindly Aunt Dete in the Swiss lowlands, but when Dete takes a job in the city, she deposits Heidi with her paternal grandfather, a gruff and solitary old man known as the Alm-Uncle who lives in an isolated cabin high in the Swiss Alps. The old man has become a bitter recluse after years of disappointment and tragedy, and he initially wants nothing to do with the child who has been thrust upon him.
But Heidi’s natural warmth, infectious joy, and genuine love gradually break through her grandfather’s hardened exterior. Life in the Alps is wonderful for the little girl — she befriends Peter, the young goatherd who tends flocks on the mountain meadows, plays with his goats, drinks fresh milk, sleeps in a hay loft, and thrives in the fresh mountain air and stunning natural beauty. Her grandfather slowly softens, rediscovering his capacity for love and connection through this remarkable child.
The idyllic Alpine life is shattered when Aunt Dete returns and takes Heidi away to Frankfurt, where she has arranged for the girl to be a companion to Klara Sesemann, the wealthy but lonely daughter of a rich businessman. Klara is confined to a wheelchair and starved for friendship, and the two girls form an immediate and deep bond. But Heidi is desperately homesick for her grandfather, the mountains, and the freedom of her Alpine home, and her health and spirit begin to decline in the confining atmosphere of the city mansion.
The household is divided between those who recognize Heidi’s suffering and those who insist she must stay as Klara’s companion. The crisis deepens until it becomes clear that Heidi must return to the mountains or her health will be permanently damaged. The resolution brings joy, reconciliation, and the triumph of love and natural living over the rigid formality of city life.
