Plot Summary
Dr. Carole Nelson is a talented physician whose life is shattered when her husband, also a doctor, is killed after becoming entangled with Joe Gurney, a ruthless gangster who fancies himself a modern Napoleon. Worse still, Carole herself falls under suspicion for her husband’s criminal associations, and her medical licence is threatened.
Determined to clear her name and avenge her husband, Carole devises an audacious plan. She maneuvers herself into Gurney’s orbit, exploiting his vanity and his obsessive desire to be portrayed as a great leader by offering to treat his wounded men. Gurney, an illiterate thug with delusions of Napoleonic grandeur, is flattered by the attention of an educated, refined woman and allows her into his inner circle without suspecting her true intentions.
Working from inside the gang, Carole gathers the evidence she needs while maintaining a facade of compliant cooperation. But as Gurney’s paranoid nature and capacity for violence escalate, the danger of discovery grows with every passing day. The final confrontation is a battle of wits between the doctor’s intelligence and the gangster’s brute cunning. This classic movie features a remarkably progressive protagonist for its era — a woman who defeats the criminal not through romance or luck but through her own intellect and courage.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
This professionally colorized and restored version brings new atmospheric depth to this compact crime thriller. The colorization process reveals the shadowy interiors of Gurney’s hideouts, the clinical brightness of Carole’s medical world, and the gritty urban settings in rich, period-accurate tones. Humphrey Bogart’s menacing performance as the self-styled Napoleon of crime gains additional visual impact when his cold, calculating eyes are rendered in naturalistic colour, while Kay Francis’s elegant composure under pressure becomes even more striking in full color. Historical Significance
King of the Underworld occupies a significant place in Humphrey Bogart’s career trajectory. Released in 1939, the same year as his supporting turn in The Roaring Twenties, the film showcased Bogart in the kind of flamboyant villain role he had been delivering with increasing authority throughout the decade, just two years before High Sierra and The Maltese Falcon would finally elevate him to leading-man status. Kay Francis, who had been one of Warner Bros.’ highest-paid stars earlier in the decade, delivered a commanding performance as a woman using intellect rather than violence to defeat a criminal empire. Director Lewis Seiler crafted the film as a tight, efficient B-picture that packed more suspense and character development into its brief running time than many films twice its length. The production was a loose remake of Dr. Socrates (1935) but distinguished itself with its female-centred narrative.
