Plot Summary
Bob Corey (Gordon MacRae) lies in a veterans’ hospital recovering from a serious back injury sustained during the war. His closest friend, Steve Connolly, visits regularly and confides that he is involved in a risky venture that could set them both up financially for life. But Steve is evasive about the details, and his visits become increasingly tense and infrequent.
Then Steve disappears entirely. No word, no explanation, no forwarding address. Bob, still confined to his hospital bed, begins receiving contradictory information about his friend’s whereabouts — from Steve’s girlfriend, from a mysterious woman who claims to know where Steve is, and from underworld figures who seem far too interested in Steve’s activities.
As Bob recovers enough to leave the hospital, he begins investigating on his own — and discovers that Steve’s disappearance is connected to a web of criminal activity that includes robbery, blackmail, and murder. Every lead takes him deeper into a world of deception where nothing is as it seems, where the people who claim to be helping him may be manipulating him, and where the truth about Steve’s fate becomes increasingly disturbing.
The narrative unfolds through multiple flashbacks and shifting perspectives, creating a puzzle-box structure that keeps the audience guessing until the final revelation. Virginia Mayo, as the enigmatic woman whose loyalties remain uncertain throughout, adds emotional complexity and dangerous allure to a plot that twists and turns with relentless ingenuity, building toward a climax that recontextualises everything that has come before.

Historical Significance
Backfire is a prime example of the post-war film noir cycle that used the experiences and traumas of returning veterans as fuel for crime narratives. The film’s complex structure — with its multiple flashbacks, unreliable narrators, and shifting allegiances — represents the narrative sophistication that film noir achieved by the early 1950s. Director Vincent Sherman, who had guided Bette Davis through several Warner Bros. productions, brought his skill with actors and narrative construction to a script that demands careful attention. The film also reflects the era’s fascination with the psychological consequences of wartime service, using the veteran’s vulnerability and determination as the emotional core of a highly technical thriller. Through colorization, this atmospheric noir has been preserved for modern audiences.
