Plot Summary
Julie Gardner works as the bookkeeper for Nick Donatello Carston, one of the most powerful racketeers in the city who has evaded the law for years through clever manipulation of his finances. When Treasury Department special agent Bill Bradford is assigned to bring Carston down, he discovers that the key to the case lies in the detailed financial records that Julie maintains. Bill goes undercover to get close to Julie and convince her to turn over the books that could put Carston behind bars. What he does not expect is to genuinely fall in love with the smart, capable woman caught between loyalty to her employer and her knowledge that he is a dangerous criminal. As Bill and Julie grow closer, Carston becomes suspicious, and the danger intensifies with threats of violence against anyone who might betray his organization. Julie must decide whether to risk her life by betraying the man who controls everything around her, while Bill races to build his case before Carston’s enforcers close in. The tension between romance and danger drives the narrative forward at breakneck pace, as Julie discovers that the quiet accountant’s desk she occupies sits at the center of a deadly criminal empire. This classic movie is a taut pre-Code crime drama inspired by the real federal campaign against organized crime that brought down some of America’s most notorious gangsters.
