Plot Summary
In the enchanted realm of Toyland, a fantastical village populated by characters from beloved nursery rhymes, Stannie Dum and Ollie Dee — played by Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy — live with the kindly old Mother Peep in her enormous shoe-shaped house. Life in Toyland is pleasant, filled with music, dancing, and the gentle comedy that arises from Stannie’s well-meaning bumbling and Ollie’s exasperated attempts to maintain order.
The peace of Toyland is threatened by the miserly villain Silas Barnaby, who holds the mortgage on Mother Peep’s shoe and uses this financial leverage to pressure the beautiful Bo Peep into marrying him. Bo Peep is in love with the dashing Tom Tom the Piper’s Son and refuses Barnaby’s repulsive advances, but the villain threatens to foreclose on the shoe and leave the entire Peep family homeless unless she agrees.
Stannie and Ollie attempt to help by working at the Toy Factory to earn money for the mortgage payment. Their tenure at the factory produces one of the film’s most memorable sequences — tasked with building one-foot-tall toy soldiers, they mistakenly create one hundred six-foot-tall soldiers instead. The Toymaker is furious, but this blunder will prove to be a spectacular saving grace.
Barnaby’s schemes escalate dramatically. He frames Tom Tom for a crime, manipulates evidence, and ultimately unleashes the terrifying Bogeymen — monstrous creatures from the cave beyond Toyland’s borders — to attack the village. As Barnaby’s Bogeymen overwhelm Toyland’s defenses, Stannie and Ollie activate the giant toy soldiers, who march in perfect formation against the invading monsters in one of the most spectacular battle sequences in classic comedy cinema.
