Plot Summary
A crusty old sea captain (Walter Long) is desperate to crew his ship but faces a serious problem: his vessel has earned a fearsome reputation as a ‘ghost ship’ — every sailor on the waterfront believes it is haunted by the spirit of a murdered crewman, and absolutely no one will sign aboard. The captain offers Stan and Ollie a generous bounty for every man they can recruit by any means necessary.
Stan and Ollie set up operations in the roughest waterfront bar in town and devise an ingenious recruitment strategy: they lure tough, unsuspecting sailors outside one by one, where Ollie coshes them over the head with a frying pan. The unconscious sailors are then dragged aboard the ship to wake up at sea, already committed to the voyage. The scheme works brilliantly — until one enormous, iron-jawed sailor proves completely immune to the frying pan and pounds the boys to a pulp before they finally manage to subdue him.
Their recruitment triumph is short-lived. The captain, satisfied with his crew but ungrateful as always, shanghai’s Stan and Ollie themselves onto the ship as added hands. Now trapped aboard the very vessel everyone believes is haunted, the boys must cope with a hostile crew, the tyrannical captain, their own terror of ghosts, and an increasingly bizarre series of supernatural encounters that may or may not be genuine. When a drunken sailor passes out and is mistaken for dead — only to rise and stagger about the ship in a white sheet — the boys’ superstitious terror reaches hysterical heights, delivering some of the finest sustained slapstick in the Laurel and Hardy catalogue as they flee from the apparent ghost through corridors, cabins, and up the rigging.
