Plot Summary

Buenos Aires, Argentina. Robert Davis (Fred Astaire) is an American dancer stranded in South America, desperately trying to get a booking at the prestigious nightclub owned by Eduardo Acuña (Adolphe Menjou), a wealthy Argentine patriarch with four beautiful daughters and an old-fashioned insistence that they marry in birth order. Three of the daughters have already married, but the fourth and most beautiful, Maria (Rita Hayworth), shows no interest whatsoever in romance, to her father’s increasing frustration.

Desperate to spark Maria’s romantic interest, Eduardo devises an elaborate scheme: he begins sending her anonymous love letters and orchids, hoping to awaken her dormant romantic feelings. The plan works — Maria is intrigued and charmed by her mysterious admirer — but complications arise when she mistakenly identifies Robert as the sender of the passionate letters.

Robert, who has been trying unsuccessfully to get an audition with Eduardo, suddenly finds himself welcomed into the Acuña household as the presumed suitor. Eduardo, realising the misunderstanding could serve his purposes, secretly enlists Robert in the deception: Robert must continue pretending to be the anonymous admirer, courting Maria with increasing ardour, while Eduardo provides the letters and Robert provides the charm.
