Plot Summary
Lora Hart (Barbara Stanwyck) is a determined young woman from a working-class background who lands a job as a night nurse despite lacking formal training, relying on sheer grit, intelligence, and a fierce desire to help people to make up for what she lacks in credentials. She befriends fellow nurse Maloney (Joan Blondell), a wise-cracking, street-smart woman who becomes her closest ally and confidante as they navigate the challenging, often dangerous world of hospital work during the depths of the Depression. When Lora is assigned as a private nurse to two wealthy children in an elegant but increasingly sinister mansion, she discovers something terrifying — the children are being deliberately starved by the menacing chauffeur Nick (Clark Gable), a cold-eyed brute who rules the household through intimidation, and the family’s corrupt attending physician, who is willingly participating in a monstrous scheme to slowly murder the children for their trust fund inheritance before anyone notices. Their alcoholic mother, kept perpetually inebriated by the conspirators, is too far gone in her addiction to notice her own children wasting away before her eyes. When Lora tries to intervene and alert the authorities, she faces terrifying physical threats from Nick, who makes clear he will not hesitate to silence her permanently, and systemic obstruction from the medical establishment, where doctors close ranks to protect one of their own. With no one in a position of power willing to believe her accusations against a respected physician, Lora must find a way to save the dying children before it is too late, ultimately turning to an unlikely and morally ambiguous ally — a charming bootlegger who owes her a favor from her hospital days and who has the criminal connections necessary to fight fire with fire.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
This colorized version of Night Nurse brings new intensity to the stark hospital corridors, the opulent but sinister mansion, and the dangerous confrontations that drive the film’s tension. The contrast between the clinical white of the hospital wards and the dark, ornate rooms of the wealthy household becomes a powerful visual metaphor in color. The original black and white film captured the pre-Code grittiness perfectly, but the professionally colorized restoration reveals the sterile greens and whites of the hospital environment, the rich but oppressive furnishings of the mansion where the children are slowly being murdered, and the period details of Depression-era New York with frame-by-frame precision. Stanwyck’s nurse uniform and Blondell’s fashionable off-duty wardrobe are rendered in authentic period colors. Watch this restored classic film in bold, dramatic color. Now also available in colour.

Historical Significance
Night Nurse is one of the definitive pre-Code films, featuring content that would have been absolutely impossible after the strict enforcement of the Production Code in 1934 — including frank depictions of violence against women, suggestions of child murder, casual dressing scenes, and a resolution that essentially endorses vigilante justice over the failed institutions of law and medicine. Director William A. Wellman, a decorated World War I pilot who brought a no-nonsense toughness to all his work, combines documentary-like realism in the hospital scenes with unflinching menace in the thriller elements, creating a film that feels shockingly modern in its anger at systemic corruption. Barbara Stanwyck’s fearless performance established her as one of Hollywood’s toughest and most compelling leading ladies, a status she would maintain for decades. Clark Gable’s brief but memorably chilling turn as the villainous Nick — including a scene where he cold-bloodedly punches Stanwyck in the face — helped build his early stardom by demonstrating the dangerous magnetism that would make him Hollywood’s biggest male star. The colorization enhances this raw, powerful classic with vivid new visual detail.
