Experience the chilling Obsession (1944) in atmospheric colorized HD. Directed by Edward Dmytryk and starring Robert Newton and Sally Gray, this taut British thriller tells the story of a Harley Street psychiatrist whose elegant, controlled exterior conceals a terrifying obsessive jealousy that drives him to plot the perfect murder of his wife’s lover. Dr. Clive Riordan (Robert Newton) has discovered his wife’s affair and, rather than confronting the situation openly, devises an elaborate scheme to kidnap and slowly kill his rival while maintaining an impeccable outward appearance of civilised normality. Combining Hitchcockian suspense with a disturbingly convincing portrait of educated, rational madness, this is British noir at its most psychologically intense. Plot Summary

London. Dr. Clive Riordan (Robert Newton) is a successful Harley Street psychiatrist — cultured, intelligent, meticulously self-controlled, and respected by his colleagues and patients. His professional life is devoted to understanding and treating the complexities of the human mind. But behind this facade of clinical authority, Riordan is consumed by an obsessive jealousy that makes him far more disturbed than any of his patients.

Riordan has discovered that his beautiful wife Storm (Sally Gray) is having an affair with an American named Bill Kronin. Rather than confronting the situation emotionally — which would mean losing control, the one thing Riordan cannot tolerate — he applies his clinical intelligence to the problem. He will eliminate the rival. He will do so methodically, rationally, and without leaving any evidence that could connect him to the crime. It will be, he believes, the perfect murder planned by a perfect mind.

Riordan kidnaps Kronin and imprisons him in a concealed room in his house, keeping him chained and drugged while he methodically prepares a bath of acid that will dissolve the body completely. The plan is meticulous — Riordan has studied the chemistry, calculated the timing, and prepared explanations for every contingency. He continues to see patients, attend social functions, and maintain his normal routine while his victim languishes in chains just feet from where Riordan conducts his professional consultations.

But Inspector Finsbury of Scotland Yard is not as easily managed as Riordan expects. The detective is dogged, perceptive, and instinctively suspicious of Riordan’s too-smooth explanations. As Finsbury’s investigation proceeds, Riordan must constantly adapt his plan, maintaining his composure under increasing pressure while the evidence slowly accumulates.

The film builds unbearable tension from the contrast between Riordan’s controlled exterior and the monstrous reality concealed behind it — the cultured doctor calmly discussing diagnoses while his prisoner suffers in the next room, the civilised dinner party host whose cellar contains a bath of acid. As Finsbury closes in, Riordan’s perfect composure begins to crack, revealing the genuine madness beneath the mask of sanity.

Cast & Crew

Director: Edward Dmytryk
Stars: Robert Newton, Sally Gray, Phil Brown, Naunton Wayne, Michael Balfour

Robert Newton delivers a masterfully controlled performance as Riordan — his surface calm making the underlying madness all the more terrifying. Newton was one of Britain’s finest character actors, and his ability to convey intelligence, menace, and instability simultaneously creates one of the great screen psychopaths. Sally Gray is compelling as the wife caught between two dangerous situations, and Naunton Wayne provides excellent dry British humour as the persistent inspector.

Historical Significance

Obsession (released in America as The Hidden Room) represents British noir cinema at its finest. Edward Dmytryk, an American director working in Britain during his exile from Hollywood during the blacklist era, brought a distinctively American sense of pace and visual drama to a quintessentially British psychological thriller. The film’s premise — the educated, rational madman who plans murder with clinical precision — anticipated later psychological thrillers by decades. Robert Newton’s performance as the controlled psychopath set a standard for the genre that remains influential. Through colorization, this tense and sophisticated thriller has been preserved for modern audiences in an atmospheric new visual presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Movie-Specific Questions

Q: Is this genuinely scary?
A: It is intensely suspenseful rather than conventionally scary. The horror comes from the psychological reality of Riordan’s madness — the idea that a cultured, intelligent professional could be methodically planning murder while chatting pleasantly at dinner. The tension builds relentlessly.

Q: Is this like Hitchcock?
A: Very much in the Hitchcockian tradition — an elegant thriller that derives its power from psychological insight rather than graphic violence. Fans of Hitchcock’s British thrillers will find much to admire here.

Q: Is Robert Newton convincing as a psychiatrist?
A: Chillingly so. Newton’s ability to project intelligence, authority, and underlying instability simultaneously creates one of the great screen performances of controlled madness.
