Plot Summary

Wanda Nash, a Brooklyn showgirl with big ambitions but limited prospects, hatches an audacious scheme to reinvent herself as Princess Olga of Sweden, complete with a blonde wig, an elaborate wardrobe, and a carefully rehearsed Swedish accent. Her plan is to sail to Europe on a luxury liner, where the persona of a beautiful European princess will attract the attention of Hollywood producers and launch her film career.

The deception begins smoothly enough. The other first-class passengers are enchanted by the beautiful and mysterious princess, and Wanda enjoys the attention and luxury that her royal disguise affords her. But complications arise almost immediately in the form of King Doyle, a sardonic and street-smart concertina player who sees through her Swedish accent from the very first conversation.

King is amused rather than outraged by the deception, and a romantic attraction develops between them as he agrees to keep her secret. But their budding romance is overshadowed by a far more serious problem: someone aboard the ship is being systematically blackmailed, and when the blackmailer is found murdered, suspicion falls on several passengers β€” including the fake princess herself.

As the ship crosses the Atlantic, more threatening notes appear and the atmosphere of glamorous luxury gives way to genuine danger. Wanda and King must work together to identify the killer before they reach port, all while maintaining the princess charade and dealing with their growing feelings for each other. The film blends screwball comedy, mystery, and romance into an irresistibly entertaining package.
