Plot Summary
Irene Guarry is a beautiful, elegant woman trapped in a gilded cage. Her husband, Charles Guarry, is wealthy, older, possessive, and coldly controlling. Their marriage is a business arrangement that provides Irene with luxury and Charles with a trophy wife, but there is no love between them — only the appearance of respectability that both must maintain.
Irene has been conducting a discreet affair with André, a sophisticated man closer to her own age. Their relationship is careful and hidden, conducted through stolen glances and secret meetings. André wants Irene to leave Charles, but she is afraid — Charles is jealous, powerful, and capable of making her life very difficult.
Into this delicate situation stumbles Pierre, the teenage son of a family friend. Pierre is young, idealistic, and hopelessly infatuated with the beautiful Irene. His puppy love is transparent to everyone — including Charles, who watches the boy’s adoration with growing suspicion and distaste.
During a social gathering, Pierre finds himself alone with Irene and, overwhelmed by his feelings, impulsively kisses her. It is an innocent, clumsy kiss from a lovesick boy — but Charles arrives at exactly the wrong moment and witnesses it. In his jealous rage, Charles does not see a harmless adolescent crush — he sees confirmation of his darkest suspicions about his wife’s fidelity.
The confrontation that follows between Charles and Irene escalates to violence. Charles is found dead. Irene is arrested and charged with murder. The trial becomes a sensation — a beautiful woman accused of killing her wealthy husband, with a scandalous kiss at the center of the case.
As the trial unfolds, questions of guilt, innocence, and the meaning of a single observed moment become matters of life and death, with Irene’s fate hanging on society’s willingness to believe a woman’s version of events over its eagerness to condemn her.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
The colorization of The Kiss reveals the sumptuous world of late 1920s wealth and glamour — the deep midnight black and shimmering silver of Irene’s exquisite evening gowns that showcase Garbo’s legendary beauty, the warm gold and ivory of the Guarry mansion’s lavish Art Deco interiors, the rich burgundy of velvet curtains and mahogany furniture reflecting prosperous European taste, the soft peach and rose tones of Garbo’s famous complexion brought to vivid new life, the deep charcoal and formal black of Charles Guarry’s severe evening dress reflecting his rigid personality, the brilliant crystal and warm amber of chandelier light during the fateful party scene, the cool blue-gray of the courtroom where Irene’s fate is decided, the soft cream whites and polished wood of the witness stand where truth and appearance clash, the warm brown and tan of young Pierre’s more casual and youthful clothing, and the dramatic interplay of light and shadow — enhanced by color — that Belgian director Jacques Feyder uses to create the moral complexity of the narrative. Historical Significance
The Kiss holds a unique and poignant position in film history as the very last silent film produced by MGM — and one of the last silent films from any major Hollywood studio. By 1929, the revolution of talking pictures had swept through the industry with devastating speed, and silent cinema — which had reached extraordinary levels of artistic sophistication — was being abandoned almost overnight. That MGM chose to make this final silent for Greta Garbo was a testament to her extraordinary screen presence, which transcended the need for spoken dialogue. Belgian director Jacques Feyder brought European sophistication to the production, crafting a film of visual elegance and narrative complexity. William Daniels’s cinematography is a masterclass in lighting the human face — his work with Garbo on this and subsequent films helped create the legendary ‘Garbo look’ that defined Hollywood glamour. The film’s courtroom sequences anticipate the sophisticated legal dramas that would become a staple of sound cinema, while its exploration of gender and power in matters of sexual morality remains strikingly relevant. Through colorization, this historic silent film landmark is preserved for modern audiences.
