Plot Summary
Diana Doyle Doris and Neville Doyle Doris have been in love since childhood — a deep, genuine bond that everyone in their privileged English social circle recognizes as inevitable. But Neville’s father, the stern Sir Morton, disapproves of Diana. He considers her too spirited, too independent, too passionate for his conventional son. He separates them, sending Neville away.
Diana, heartbroken but proud, marries David Doyle Doris — a charming, handsome man from their circle. The marriage begins well enough, but on their wedding night, David throws himself from a hotel window to his death. Society concludes that Diana must have driven him to it — that some terrible revelation about her past must have caused the tragedy.
Diana says nothing to defend herself. She allows society to brand her as a fallen woman because the truth is far more devastating: David killed himself because he was facing exposure as an embezzler who had stolen from friends and family. Diana protects his memory — and his family — by accepting the blame herself.
Exiled by scandal, Diana travels through Europe, drifting from one affair to another, living up to the reputation society has unfairly assigned her. She becomes what they said she was, because what she truly was has been denied to her. Meanwhile, Neville — believing the worst about Diana — marries a proper, approved woman at his father’s insistence.
Years later, Diana returns and encounters Neville again. The old love flares immediately, undimmed by time and betrayal. But Neville is married, and the truth about David’s death remains buried. The question becomes whether love and truth can survive in a society built on appearances, judgment, and the savage double standard that destroys women while forgiving men.

Historical Significance
A Woman of Affairs represents the peak of the legendary Garbo-Gilbert partnership and one of the finest examples of sophisticated silent drama in Hollywood history. Adapted from Michael Arlen’s sensationally successful and controversial novel The Green Hat — which had to be significantly altered to satisfy censors — the film nevertheless retains the novel’s fierce critique of sexual hypocrisy and double standards. Clarence Brown’s direction is extraordinarily assured, creating a film of genuine emotional complexity that transcends melodrama. William Daniels’s cinematography of Garbo achieves a level of beauty that has rarely been equaled — his lighting of her face in the close-ups became the gold standard for Hollywood glamour photography. The film was one of the biggest commercial successes of 1928 and confirmed Garbo and Gilbert as the most popular romantic screen pairing of their era. Douglas Fairbanks Jr., in an early supporting role, acquits himself admirably in the distinguished company. Through colorization, this pinnacle of silent Hollywood romance is preserved for modern audiences.
