Plot Summary

In the Paris of the 1640s, Cyrano de Bergerac is a man of extraordinary gifts — a soldier of legendary courage, a poet of genuine brilliance, a wit whose verbal duels are as devastating as his swordsmanship, and a man of fierce personal honour who refuses to flatter the powerful or compromise his integrity for advancement. He is also cursed with an enormous nose that makes him, in his own unshakeable conviction, physically grotesque and permanently unlovable.

Cyrano is secretly, desperately, hopelessly in love with his beautiful cousin Roxane. He has loved her since childhood, but his certainty that his appearance makes him ridiculous has prevented him from ever speaking. When Roxane confides that she has fallen in love with Christian de Neuvillette — a new cadet in Cyrano’s regiment who is handsome, brave, and tongue-tied — Cyrano is devastated but makes a characteristically generous decision.

He will help Christian win Roxane.
