Plot Summary
A law student becomes an outlaw French revolutionary when he decides to avenge the unjust killing of his friend. Andre-Louis Moreau, a young law student in pre-revolutionary France, witnesses his friend Philippe de Vilmorin killed by the aristocratic Marquis de la Tour d’Azyr in a duel that was essentially murder. Outraged by the injustice and the aristocrat’s abuse of power, Andre-Louis vows to avenge his friend’s death.
To get close to the aristocrat who has killed his friend, the student adopts the identity of Scaramouche the clown. Andre-Louis joins a traveling theater company, where he learns the art of acting and sword fighting. As Scaramouche, he becomes a popular performer, using his new identity to move through different levels of society and gather information about the Marquis.
As the French Revolution begins, Andre-Louis finds himself caught up in the political upheaval. His quest for personal revenge becomes intertwined with the larger struggle for justice and equality. He becomes a revolutionary leader, using his skills as a speaker and fighter to advance the cause of the common people while continuing his pursuit of the Marquis.
The film builds to an epic sword fight between Andre-Louis and the Marquis, one of the longest in cinema history, where personal vengeance and political justice converge. Andre-Louis must choose between revenge and the larger cause, discovering that true justice may require more than personal satisfaction.
