Plot Summary

Carrie Meeber arrives in Chicago from a small Midwestern town, filled with hope and ambition for a better life. She is young, attractive, and completely unprepared for the harsh realities of the industrial city. After a demoralising experience working in a sweatshop under brutal conditions, Carrie encounters Charles Drouet, a smooth-talking travelling salesman who offers her comfort, companionship, and an escape from poverty. Carrie becomes his mistress, trading her virtue for security in a bargain that the film presents with remarkable moral complexity.

Through Drouet, Carrie meets George Hurstwood, the distinguished and prosperous manager of an upscale restaurant. Hurstwood is everything Drouet is not — cultured, refined, and deeply serious. He falls passionately in love with Carrie, and despite being married with a family, he begins an affair that quickly becomes an all-consuming obsession.
