Plot Summary

Maryland, April 1865. Dr. Samuel Mudd (Warner Baxter) is a respected country physician living quietly with his wife and young daughter. On the night of April 14, a stranger appears at his door with a badly broken leg, begging for medical treatment. Dr. Mudd, honouring his oath as a physician, sets the leg and provides shelter for the night. He does not recognise the injured man — it is John Wilkes Booth, fleeing after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.

When the authorities discover that Mudd treated Booth, the doctor is arrested and charged with conspiracy in the assassination plot. Despite his protestations of innocence — he had no knowledge of Booth’s crime and was simply fulfilling his duty as a physician — Mudd is convicted by a military tribunal in the hysterical atmosphere of post-assassination Washington, where the public demands vengeance and the government needs conspirators to punish.

Mudd is sentenced to life imprisonment at Fort Jefferson, a massive brick fortress on a desolate island in the Dry Tortugas, seventy miles west of Key West. The prison is a nightmare — isolated, disease-ridden, brutally administered, and surrounded by shark-infested waters that make escape virtually impossible. The other prisoners include genuine conspirators and hardened criminals, and the guards treat Mudd with particular contempt as a supposed presidential assassin.

Mudd endures years of grinding suffering — hard labour under the tropical sun, inadequate food and water, separation from his family, and the constant despair of knowing that he has been imprisoned for an act of simple medical compassion. His health deteriorates, his spirit is tested to the breaking point, and escape seems impossible.

The turning point comes when yellow fever erupts at the fort, decimating guards and prisoners alike. When the prison doctor dies of the disease, Mudd — still a physician despite everything — steps forward to treat the dying men. His courage and medical skill during the epidemic, when he could easily have let his tormentors die, ultimately leads to a campaign for his release and a presidential pardon that restores his freedom and reputation.

Historical Significance

The Prisoner of Shark Island is one of John Ford’s finest achievements of the 1930s and one of the most compelling examinations of injustice in American cinema. The case of Dr. Samuel Mudd remained controversial for over a century — his family fought for decades to clear his name, and the question of whether he was truly an innocent physician or a knowing conspirator has never been definitively resolved. Ford presents Mudd as a victim of circumstance and mob justice, creating a powerful argument for the presumption of innocence and the dangers of political trials conducted in an atmosphere of national hysteria. The film’s scenes at Fort Jefferson remain among the most convincing and atmospheric prison sequences in classic cinema. Through colorization, this masterful historical drama has been preserved for modern audiences in a striking new visual presentation.
