Plot Summary

The Wyoming Territory, the 1880s. Reb Doyle (Wallace Beery) and his amiable Mexican partner Dorito (Leo Carrillo) are a pair of colourful cattle rustlers who have been making a comfortable living stealing livestock from the large ranches that dominate the territory. They are outlaws, certainly, but of the cheerful, roguish variety — more interested in a good steak and a warm campfire than in genuine villainy.

Their easygoing existence is disrupted when they encounter a community of small farmers and homesteaders who are being systematically driven off their land by a powerful cattle baron. The rancher uses intimidation, property destruction, and hired gunmen to clear the settlers from land he considers his own personal range. Families who have invested years of backbreaking labour in building their farms face ruin and displacement, and the territorial law is either too distant or too corrupt to intervene.

Reb initially wants no part of the conflict — he is an outlaw, not a crusader, and involving himself in a range war is a good way to get killed. But his encounter with the settlers and their families, particularly a spirited young woman (Ann Rutherford) whose determination and courage impress him, awakens a sense of justice he thought he had long since abandoned.
