Plot Summary
Grandpa Martin Vanderhof (Lionel Barrymore) is a delightfully unconventional patriarch who, years ago, walked away from the business world because he simply stopped enjoying it. Since then, his rambling New York townhouse has become a haven for loveable eccentrics — family members and friends who pursue their passions with cheerful disregard for profit or social convention. His daughter Penny (Spring Byington) writes plays because a typewriter was once delivered to the house by accident. Her husband Paul (Samuel S. Hinds) manufactures fireworks in the basement with his enthusiastic assistant Mr. DePinna. Their daughter Essie (Ann Miller) studies ballet despite having no discernible talent, while her husband Ed prints leaflets on the press and plays the xylophone. The Russian emigre ballet teacher Mr. Kolenkhov arrives regularly to declare everything “confidential” and to devour the household’s cooking.
Into this paradise of happy chaos comes Tony Kirby (James Stewart), a handsome young man who works for his father’s corporation but shares none of his father’s ruthless ambition. Tony has fallen deeply in love with Alice Sycamore (Jean Arthur), Grandpa’s other granddaughter and the one member of the household who holds a conventional job — as Tony’s secretary. Alice loves Tony in return but is terrified of what will happen when his wealthy, status-conscious parents meet her gloriously unconventional family.
The inevitable meeting between the families is a magnificent comic disaster. Tony’s father Anthony P. Kirby (Edward Arnold) is a powerful Wall Street banker engaged in a massive real estate deal that, it turns out, requires the purchase and demolition of Grandpa Vanderhof’s beloved house. The collision between Kirby’s world of power and acquisition and the Vanderhof world of simple happiness and human connection is both hilarious and profoundly meaningful. When the families end up in jail together following a fireworks explosion, the enforced proximity forces everyone to confront questions about what truly constitutes a successful and worthwhile life.
