Plot Summary

While travelling by train from London to the countryside, Miss Marple (Margaret Rutherford) witnesses a shocking crime through the window — in a passing carriage on a parallel track, she clearly sees a woman being strangled by a pair of hands around her throat. But when the train stops and Miss Marple reports the murder to the police and the railway authorities, no body is found anywhere along the line, and the skeptical Inspector Craddock (Charles Tingwell) politely dismisses her account as the fantasy of an imaginative elderly woman.

Undeterred and absolutely certain of what she saw, the indomitable amateur detective pulls out her maps and railway timetables and calculates exactly where the body must have been thrown from the moving train. Her analysis points to the sprawling, overgrown grounds of Ackenthorpe Hall, a crumbling country estate owned by the cantankerous, penny-pinching patriarch Luther Ackenthorpe (James Robertson Justice), who lives surrounded by his fractious family of relatives — each greedily waiting for the old man to die so they can inherit his considerable fortune. Miss Marple takes a position as a domestic servant in the household to investigate from within, and she soon makes a grim discovery — the missing body hidden in an ancient stone sarcophagus in the estate’s barn. With a houseful of suspects who all had opportunity and motive, including Luther’s sons, a family friend with a shadowy past (Arthur Kennedy), and the household staff, Miss Marple must untangle decades of family secrets, hidden identities, poisoned relationships, and conflicting alibis to expose the murderer before they strike again. This classic movie combines witty humor with genuine suspense in the finest tradition of Christie adaptations.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

This colorized version of Murder She Said transforms the English countryside, the sprawling grounds of Ackenthorpe Hall, and the charming village settings into a visual feast. The original black and white photography captured the cozy mystery atmosphere perfectly, but the professionally colorized restoration brings out the lush green hedgerows and rolling fields of the English countryside, the faded grandeur of Ackenthorpe Hall with its ivy-covered walls and dusty interiors, the warm brown earth tones of the barn where the body is discovered, and Margaret Rutherford’s distinctive tweed outfits and sensible hats with frame-by-frame precision. The contrast between the pleasant, sunlit English landscape and the dark secrets hidden within the crumbling estate creates a wonderfully atmospheric viewing experience in color. Watch this restored classic film in warm, inviting new color. Now also available in colour.

Historical Significance

Murder She Said launched one of the most beloved mystery film series of the 1960s, with Margaret Rutherford going on to play Miss Marple in four films total — followed by Murder at the Gallop, Murder Most Foul, and Murder Ahoy. Adapted from Agatha Christie’s novel 4:50 from Paddington, the film established Rutherford’s unique and unforgettable interpretation of Miss Marple as a physically energetic, fearless, and magnificently eccentric investigator — quite different from Christie’s quiet, knitting-chair detective but irresistibly entertaining. While Christie herself reportedly had reservations about the boisterous interpretation, she eventually warmed to Rutherford personally and even dedicated her novel The Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side to the actress. The film also featured a young Joan Hickson in a small role — the same actress who would later become the definitive television Miss Marple in the acclaimed BBC series decades later. Rutherford’s real-life husband Stringer Davis appeared as Miss Marple’s companion Mr. Stringer. The colorization preserves the charm of this quintessentially British whodunit.
