Plot Summary

In the sweltering, dangerous streets of 1925 Damascus, the French colonial military struggles desperately to maintain control over an increasingly restive Syria where nationalist rebels are growing bolder and more organized with each passing week. Operating in the shadows of this volatile political landscape is Harry Smith, a cynical, self-serving American gunrunner who has been making a comfortable fortune selling weapons to the Syrian rebel movement fighting for independence from French rule. Smith cares nothing for either side of the conflict — freedom, patriotism, and justice are abstractions he long ago abandoned in favor of cold hard cash.

Colonel Donatien Feroud of French military intelligence is a shrewd, relentless officer determined to crush the arms trade that is fueling the rebellion and to bring the insurgency under control before it engulfs the entire region in bloodshed. Feroud’s methodical investigation leads him inevitably toward Smith, but the situation becomes dangerously complicated when the American gunrunner becomes romantically involved with Violette, the colonel’s beautiful, restless French mistress. What begins as Smith’s opportunistic seduction of a lonely, neglected woman evolves into something unexpectedly genuine, catching the cynical arms dealer off guard with emotions he thought himself incapable of feeling.

As the political situation deteriorates rapidly and the rebels launch increasingly bold attacks against French military positions, the three-way tension between Smith, Feroud, and Violette reaches a breaking point. When Colonel Feroud is kidnapped by rebel fighters during a botched negotiation and held as a hostage against French withdrawal, Smith faces the ultimate test of character — he must choose between saving his own skin and escaping Damascus with the fortune he has accumulated, or risking everything including his life for the woman he has come to love and for a cause that has nothing to do with profit. The desert wind known as the sirocco sweeps through Damascus, and with it comes a reckoning that will reveal what Harry Smith is truly made of.

Historical Significance

Sirocco features Humphrey Bogart in a morally ambiguous role that deliberately echoes his iconic Rick Blaine from Casablanca — another cynical American profiteer in a foreign city torn by political conflict who must ultimately decide whether self-interest or love will guide his actions. Lee J. Cobb brings formidable intensity and intelligence to the role of the French colonel, creating a worthy adversary whose dedication to duty mirrors Smith’s dedication to profit. The film also features early screen appearances by Zero Mostel and Everett Sloane, both of whom would go on to distinguished careers. Set during the real Syrian Revolt of 1925-1927 against French colonial rule, the film offers a rare Hollywood glimpse of Middle Eastern anti-colonial struggles. Through professional colorization, this atmospheric Bogart thriller reaches new audiences.
