Plot Summary

Little Barbara (Margaret O’Brien), a precocious young girl, arrives alone in New York City searching for her older sister Barbara ‘Mike’ (June Allyson), who plays bass fiddle in José Iturbi’s prestigious symphony orchestra. Mike is pregnant and anxiously awaiting letters from her husband who is serving overseas in the Pacific during World War II. When the letters suddenly stop coming, Mike fears the worst, and the entire orchestra rallies around her to keep her spirits up, led by the irrepressible Andrews (Jimmy Durante), the orchestra’s wisecracking, warm-hearted manager who becomes a surrogate uncle to little Barbara.

Barbara quickly wins the hearts of everyone in the orchestra with her innocent charm, boundless curiosity, and unwavering devotion to her sister. She sneaks into rehearsals, charms the stern conductor, and creates havoc backstage — all while clinging to her beloved stuffed animal and insisting on sleeping in Mike’s orchestra locker. The musicians, each dealing with their own wartime worries and loneliness, find unexpected comfort in the child’s presence. Meanwhile, Mike struggles to keep performing as her pregnancy advances and her anxiety about her husband’s silence grows more desperate. Andrews secretly works behind the scenes to discover the truth about the missing letters, and the orchestra members pool their resources and emotional support to help their colleague through the crisis. As the final concert of the season approaches, Barbara’s innocent faith and the solidarity of the musicians bring an emotional resolution that captures the spirit of wartime unity and hope. This classic movie blends comedy, music, and genuine wartime sentiment into a deeply affecting story.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

This colorized version of Music for Millions reveals the elegant concert halls, the backstage bustle, and the wartime New York settings with beautiful new visual warmth. The original black and white film captured the musical performances and emotional scenes with great skill, but the professionally colorized restoration brings out the formal black tuxedos and flowing evening gowns of the orchestra members, the rich mahogany of the string instruments gleaming under stage lights, the vibrant stage lighting of the grand concert hall with its red velvet seats and gold-trimmed balconies, the cozy warmth of the backstage dressing rooms and boarding house interiors, and the period details of 1940s New York street scenes with frame-by-frame precision. The contrast between the elegant formality of the concert performances and the intimate, emotional behind-the-scenes drama is beautifully enhanced by the colorization. Margaret O’Brien, just seven years old at the time, delivered one of her most beloved performances, cementing her status as the era’s most accomplished child actress — she would receive a special Academy Juvenile Award that year for her outstanding screen work. The film features authentic classical music performances by the renowned pianist José Iturbi, who plays several pieces including works by Chopin and Grieg, and harmonica virtuoso Larry Adler, whose performances were considered some of the finest ever captured on film. Jimmy Durante brings his signature warmth and comic timing, breaking the fourth wall and ad-libbing in his inimitable style.
