Plot Summary

Seasoned veteran detective Sam Wagner (Joseph Cotten) leads a carefully planned routine raid on mild-mannered bank teller Leon ‘Foggy’ Poole (Wendell Corey), who has been quietly embezzling funds from the bank. The arrest seems straightforward until a stray bullet from the raid accidentally strikes and kills Poole’s young wife. The killing is ruled accidental, and Poole is convicted of embezzlement and sent to prison — but behind his thick glasses and meek exterior, a terrible transformation begins.

Years of imprisonment fuel Poole’s grief into an obsessive, calculating hatred directed at one man: Sam Wagner. In his cell, the once-timid bank clerk methodically plans his revenge with patient, frightening precision. He exercises relentlessly, studies his target’s habits through smuggled newspapers, and waits for the perfect moment. When Poole finally escapes from the prison farm — killing a guard with shocking efficiency — the police are stunned. This is not the harmless ‘Foggy’ they remember.

Poole’s plan is devastatingly simple and cruel: he will kill Sam Wagner’s beautiful wife Lila (Rhonda Fleming), making the detective suffer the exact same loss that destroyed Poole’s own life. As Poole closes in on the Wagner household with methodical patience, Sam must convince his sceptical superiors of the genuine threat, protect his terrified wife who has become bait in a deadly trap, and hunt an adversary who proves far more cunning, resourceful, and ruthlessly dangerous than anyone imagined possible. Boetticher builds almost unbearable tension as the night closes in and the killer methodically stalks his prey through suburban streets and quiet neighbourhoods that suddenly feel like a dangerous, terrifying battlefield.
