Directed by the great Fritz Lang, this poetic French-language adaptation of Ferenc Molnár’s beloved play stars Charles Boyer in a magnetic performance as Liliom, a handsome, volatile carnival barker in a Parisian fairground whose reckless charm and dangerous pride lead him into a passionate but turbulent love affair with the gentle, devoted Julie (Madeleine Ozeray). When Liliom’s inability to provide for Julie and their unborn child drives him to a desperate robbery that ends in tragedy, he is summoned before a celestial tribunal — and offered an extraordinary chance to return to Earth for one day to redeem himself through a single act of genuine love. Plot Summary
Liliom (Charles Boyer) is a carousel barker at a Parisian fairground — magnetically attractive, swaggeringly confident, and utterly irresponsible. Women adore him. His employer, Madame Muscat, keeps him on because he draws crowds. But Liliom’s charm masks a deep insecurity and a volatility that can turn dangerous without warning.
Among the women drawn to the carousel is Julie (Madeleine Ozeray), a shy servant girl whose quiet devotion pierces Liliom’s defences in a way that no one else’s attention ever has. They fall in love — genuinely, deeply, and against all practical sense. Julie leaves her position to be with Liliom, and Liliom, fired by Madame Muscat out of jealousy, finds himself unable and unwilling to find honest work.
Their life together is a volatile mixture of tenderness and cruelty. Liliom loves Julie but cannot express it except through frustration and roughness. Julie loves Liliom and endures his behaviour because she sees the frightened, tender man beneath the bluster — a man who is terrified of vulnerability and incapable of admitting that he needs anyone.
When Julie announces her pregnancy, Liliom is overwhelmed. The desire to provide — to be the man his child deserves — wars with his pride and his complete lack of practical skills. A petty criminal persuades Liliom to participate in a robbery: one bold stroke that will provide for Julie and the baby. The robbery is botched, and Liliom, facing capture and disgrace, takes his own life.
Fritz Lang’s extraordinary vision takes over as Liliom arrives in the afterlife — a celestial realm rendered with Lang’s characteristic visual brilliance. Before a tribunal of otherworldly judges, Liliom’s life is reviewed and his fate considered. He is offered an extraordinary opportunity: he may return to Earth for one day, years in the future, to visit the daughter he never knew and to perform one act of selfless love that might redeem his wasted life.
Liliom’s return to Earth — his encounter with the young woman who is his daughter, his desperate attempt to express the love he was never able to show in life — provides one of cinema’s most achingly beautiful final acts, a meditation on whether love can transcend death and whether it is ever too late to become worthy of the people who believed in you.

Historical Significance
Liliom (1934) was Fritz Lang’s first film after fleeing Nazi Germany, made during his brief sojourn in France before emigrating to Hollywood. The film represents a remarkable departure from Lang’s German work — the cold precision of M and Metropolis replaced by a warmth and romanticism that reveals an entirely different facet of the director’s genius. Charles Boyer’s performance launched him toward international stardom, while the film itself stands as one of the finest adaptations of Molnár’s play — more visually ambitious than Borzage’s 1930 version and more emotionally sophisticated. The afterlife sequences display Lang’s Expressionist training at its most lyrical, creating celestial imagery that influenced subsequent fantasy films for decades. Through colorization, this rare Fritz Lang treasure has been preserved for modern audiences.
