Plot Summary

Stephen Arden, a charming and well-connected lawyer, is desperate to marry his beautiful fiancΓ©e Amanda Cooper, but Amanda keeps postponing the wedding, unable to explain her persistent reluctance. In frustration, Stephen arranges for his friend Dr. Tony Flagg, a psychiatrist, to treat Amanda and resolve whatever psychological block is preventing her from walking down the aisle.

Dr. Flagg is a brilliant but unconventional psychiatrist who approaches Amanda’s case with professional detachment β€” at first. Using dream analysis and hypnotic techniques, he begins to explore Amanda’s subconscious, discovering that her reluctance to marry Stephen may have deeper roots than simple cold feet. The sessions bring Tony and Amanda into increasingly intimate contact, and the chemistry between the analytical doctor and his vivacious patient becomes impossible to ignore.

Complications multiply when Tony inadvertently uses hypnotic suggestion in a way that makes Amanda behave in wildly uninhibited and socially disastrous ways, wreaking havoc on her personal life and her engagement. The hypnotic mishap leads to a series of increasingly absurd situations as Tony tries to undo the damage while simultaneously dealing with his growing romantic feelings for his patient β€” feelings that violate every rule of professional ethics.

The romantic triangle between Tony, Amanda, and the increasingly suspicious Stephen drives the comedy toward a resolution that involves more hypnosis, more confusion, and some of the most inventive and joyful dance sequences in the Astaire-Rogers canon. The climactic slow-motion dance to “Change Partners” is one of the most beautiful and romantic moments in musical film history.

Historical Significance

Carefree is the eighth of ten films pairing Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, consistently ranked among the greatest dance partnerships in cinema history. The film features Irving Berlin’s “Change Partners,” which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song, and the slow-motion dance sequence to this song represents a technical and artistic innovation in musical filmmaking. The film also contains the first on-screen kiss between Astaire and Rogers β€” previously they had always ended their romantic dances with an embrace rather than a kiss. Through colorization, this essential musical classic is preserved for modern audiences.
