Plot Summary

Hollywood, the early 1960s. The crumbling mansion of the Hudson sisters stands as a monument to faded glory and toxic codependency. Inside its dark rooms live two women whose lives have been defined by a rivalry that began in childhood and has curdled over decades into something monstrous.

Jane Hudson (Bette Davis) was once “Baby Jane,” an adorable child vaudeville star whose act made her famous across America. Her older sister Blanche (Joan Crawford) lived in Jane’s shadow during childhood, but as they grew up, the balance shifted — Blanche became a beautiful and acclaimed Hollywood movie star while Jane’s adult acting career failed spectacularly. A mysterious car accident left Blanche paralysed from the waist down, wheelchair-bound and dependent on Jane for her care — a development that has always been attributed to Jane’s drunken jealousy.

Now, decades later, Jane is descending into alcoholic madness, her mind increasingly confused between present reality and the lost glory of her childhood fame. She still performs “Baby Jane” routines in front of her mirror, her aging face caked with the grotesque doll-like makeup of her child act. Blanche, trapped upstairs and entirely dependent on Jane for food and contact with the outside world, begins to realise with growing horror that her sister’s madness is becoming dangerous.

Jane’s behaviour escalates from cruel to terrifying. She intercepts Blanche’s mail and telephone calls, cutting her off from any possibility of help. She serves Blanche increasingly revolting meals — dead rats and other horrors — presented with a sweet, deranged smile. She hires a pianist named Edwin Flagg (Victor Buono) to accompany her comeback act, planning to revive her Baby Jane career while keeping Blanche imprisoned upstairs.

Blanche’s desperate attempts to signal for help and Jane’s increasingly psychotic efforts to prevent her create a claustrophobic nightmare that builds to a shattering climax on a sun-bleached beach, where a final revelation about the long-ago car accident changes everything the audience believed about both sisters.

Historical Significance

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? is one of the most important and influential films in cinema history. It revitalised the careers of both Davis and Crawford, launched the “Grande Dame Guignol” genre of psychological horror, and proved that films starring older women could be massively profitable. The real-life rivalry between Davis and Crawford, which fuelled their on-screen intensity, has become one of Hollywood’s most legendary feuds, immortalised in the FX series Feud. The film earned five Academy Award nominations, winning for Costume Design, and Davis and Crawford’s performances remain benchmarks of screen acting. Through colorization, this timeless masterpiece of psychological horror has been preserved for modern audiences in a vivid new visual presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Movie-Specific Questions

Q: How scary is this film?
A: It is genuinely disturbing. The psychological horror — watching someone imprisoned and tormented by a family member — creates deep unease, and Bette Davis’s portrayal of Jane’s madness is both terrifying and heartbreaking. This is not a jump-scare horror film but a slow-building psychological nightmare that gets under your skin.

Q: Were Bette Davis and Joan Crawford really rivals?
A: Yes. Their feud was legendary and very real, stretching back decades to the 1930s when both were competing for the top of the Hollywood hierarchy. Director Robert Aldrich deliberately exploited their mutual hostility to create the extraordinary tension between their characters. The on-screen chemistry of hatred is fuelled by genuine feeling.

Q: Is the ending really a twist?
A: Without spoiling it — the final revelation about the car accident that paralysed Blanche completely reframes everything you have watched, casting both sisters in entirely new light. It is one of cinema’s most devastating final twists and rewards repeat viewing.
