Plot Summary

In seventeenth-century England, the young son of a rebellious lord is punished for his father’s defiance against the tyrannical King James II. The boy’s face is surgically mutilated by a travelling band of comprachicos — criminals who deliberately disfigure children to create sideshow freaks — carving his mouth into a hideous, permanent grin that he can never close or control. Left to die in the snow, the boy rescues a blind baby girl abandoned in the arms of her dead mother, and the two orphans are taken in by Ursus (Cesare Gravina), a kindly travelling philosopher and showman.

Years later, the boy has grown into Gwynplaine (Conrad Veidt), a handsome, intelligent, deeply sensitive young man trapped behind a face that turns his private anguish into a permanent public joke.
