Plot Summary
King, a magnificent and loyal German Shepherd, is the beloved companion of a wealthy man who has left King his entire fortune in his will. When King is murdered by poisoning — killed by someone who wants to get their hands on the inheritance — the faithful dog finds himself in “Beastatory,” a heavenly waiting room for animals. The celestial authorities inform King that his death was an injustice and offer him an extraordinary opportunity: he can return to Earth in human form to identify and expose his killer.
King is reincarnated as Rex Doyle (Dick Powell), a handsome and charming private investigator who retains all of King’s keen instincts, loyalty, and dog-like behavioural quirks — he is instinctively attracted to fire hydrants, is suspiciously interested in bones, and has an uncanny ability to sense dishonesty that owes more to canine perception than human detective skills. To assist him, a former racehorse named Lady is reincarnated as Ellen (Peggy Dow), a beautiful and spirited woman who serves as Rex’s secretary and investigative partner.
Rex sets about investigating his own murder with an enthusiasm that combines a detective’s analytical approach with a dog’s tenacious loyalty. The prime suspects include the various humans who stood to gain from his death — people who were jealous of a dog inheriting a fortune, those with debts or schemes that the inheritance would solve, and individuals whose true characters were hidden beneath polished human facades. Rex’s unique perspective — literally that of a dog in human clothing — allows him to see through deceptions and read people with an instinct that baffles the human detectives around him.
As Rex gets closer to the truth, the killer becomes aware that someone is investigating and takes steps to protect themselves. The comedy escalates through a series of clever situations in which Rex’s canine instincts create hilarious complications in social situations while simultaneously giving him advantages no ordinary detective would possess. The resolution is both satisfying as a mystery and touching as a story about loyalty that transcends the boundaries between species.

Historical Significance
You Never Can Tell stands as one of the most genuinely original comedies of Hollywood’s golden age, with a premise so inventive that it has never been successfully duplicated. The film belongs to the fantasy-comedy tradition that includes Here Comes Mr. Jordan and The Bishop’s Wife, in which supernatural premises are used to explore fundamentally human themes through humour. Dick Powell’s performance demonstrated remarkable versatility from an actor who had successfully reinvented himself from musical leading man to hard-boiled detective to sophisticated comedian. The film’s gentle humour and imaginative storytelling have earned it a devoted cult following among classic film enthusiasts who value originality above formula. Through colorization, this charming and inventive comedy has been preserved for modern audiences in a delightful new visual presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Movie-Specific Questions
Q: Is the premise as wild as it sounds?
A: Yes — and it works wonderfully. The film commits completely to its outrageous premise and plays it with enough charm and intelligence that the audience accepts and delights in the conceit. Dick Powell’s subtle incorporation of canine behaviour into his human performance is a constant source of clever, understated comedy.
Q: Is this a comedy or a mystery?
A: Both. The mystery element — who killed King the dog? — provides a genuine detective plot thread that keeps the narrative moving forward, while the comedy comes from the absurdity of a dog-turned-human navigating the complexities of human social life with canine instincts and perspectives.
Q: Is this suitable for dog lovers?
A: Absolutely. The film is built on a deep appreciation for the loyalty, intelligence, and emotional depth of dogs. The premise — that a dog’s devotion is so powerful it transcends death itself — makes this a uniquely moving experience for anyone who has loved a faithful animal companion.
