Plot Summary

Mexico. A truck driver on a remote desert highway is terrified by an encounter with something enormous and barely human that attacks his vehicle and steals his cargo of food. When American authorities investigate the incident, they discover massive footprints and evidence of destruction consistent with a being of staggering proportions. Joyce Manning (Sally Fraser), sister of Colonel Glenn Manning — the soldier who was exposed to a plutonium blast and grew to sixty feet tall before apparently falling to his death from Boulder Dam — becomes convinced that her brother survived and has been living in the Mexican wilderness.

Joyce’s persistence convinces the military to mount a search operation, and they discover that Manning has indeed survived — but in a horrifying condition. The plutonium that caused his growth has also caused severe brain damage and facial disfigurement. Half of Manning’s face is destroyed, leaving exposed bone and tissue, and his mind has deteriorated to an animalistic state of confusion and rage. He is no longer the articulate officer he once was but a tormented creature driven by pain and hunger.

The military devises an elaborate plan to capture Manning using trucks loaded with drugged bread — exploiting his desperate need for food to lure him into a trap. The operation succeeds, and Manning is transported to Los Angeles, where he is confined in an aircraft hangar at an airport while scientists attempt to find a treatment for his condition. Joyce desperately hopes that her brother’s humanity can be restored, clinging to moments when recognition seems to flicker in his damaged eyes.

But containment proves impossible. Manning’s enormous strength and deteriorating mental state make him increasingly dangerous. When he inevitably breaks free, the colossal beast rampages through Los Angeles, and the military must decide whether to destroy him or attempt another capture — while Joyce pleads for the life of the tortured creature who was once her brother.

Historical Significance

War of the Colossal Beast is a notable sequel to The Amazing Colossal Man (1957) and represents the peak of Bert I. Gordon’s series of giant creature films that defined a significant strand of 1950s science fiction cinema. The film’s final moments were originally presented in colour — a dramatic switch from black-and-white that stunned contemporary audiences. Gordon’s ingenious use of rear projection and forced perspective to create the illusion of a sixty-foot monster on a modest budget exemplifies the resourceful creativity of the American International Pictures era. Through colorization, this entertaining monster classic has been preserved for modern audiences in a vivid new visual presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Movie-Specific Questions

Q: Do I need to see The Amazing Colossal Man first?
A: While seeing the original enhances the experience, this sequel provides enough backstory through dialogue and flashbacks to be enjoyed independently. The essential premise — a military officer mutated into a sixty-foot giant — is clearly established early in the film.

Q: How are the special effects?
A: The effects are characteristic of 1950s B-movies — inventive, atmospheric, and entertaining within their budget limitations. Bert I. Gordon’s use of rear projection and forced perspective creates an effective illusion of scale, and the monster’s disfigured makeup is genuinely unsettling for the period.

Q: Is this scary or more fun?
A: It balances both. Manning’s disfigured appearance and tortured existence create genuine sympathy and unease, while the rampage sequences deliver exciting spectacle. The emotional story of Joyce trying to save her brother adds depth beyond simple monster thrills.
