Plot Summary

Months after the catastrophic events in New York, filmmaker and showman Carl Denham finds himself besieged by lawsuits and public outrage over the Kong disaster. Desperate to escape his creditors, Denham boards Captain Englehorn’s ship and sets sail for the Far East. Along the way, he encounters the scheming Captain Nils Helstrom — the very man who first told Denham about Skull Island and its legendary treasure. This classic movie continues to captivate new generations of viewers.

Helstrom convinces the crew to mutiny, and a violent storm shipwrecks the group back on the shores of Skull Island. There, Denham discovers a young, albino ape — the gentle son of Kong himself. Unlike his fearsome father, this smaller white ape is playful and surprisingly protective. When Denham rescues the young Kong from quicksand, the two form an unlikely bond.

Joined by the resourceful stowaway Hilda Petersen, Denham and his companions must navigate treacherous jungles, battle prehistoric creatures, and survive a devastating earthquake that threatens to sink the entire island beneath the waves. In the film’s emotional climax, the Son of Kong makes a selfless sacrifice, holding Denham above the rising waters as Skull Island is destroyed forever.

Historical Significance

Released just nine months after the phenomenal success of King Kong, The Son of Kong was rushed into production by RKO Pictures to capitalize on the monster-movie craze of the early 1930s. Despite its shorter runtime and lighter tone, the film holds an important place in cinema history as one of the earliest sequels in the creature feature genre.

Ernest B. Schoedsack returned to direct, and Robert Armstrong reprised his iconic role as Carl Denham, giving the character a more reflective and sympathetic arc. The stop-motion effects, while produced on a tighter budget, still showcase the extraordinary craftsmanship of Willis H. O’Brien and his team.

The film’s emotional ending — where the Son of Kong sacrifices himself to save Denham — was considered remarkably poignant for a monster movie of its era and influenced how filmmakers approached creature-human relationships in later films like Mighty Joe Young (1949).
