Plot Summary
Prince Dorian Dorestil (Robert Montgomery), a charming but thoroughly bored European prince travelling incognito aboard a steamship, encounters the beautiful and enigmatic Miss Dorestil (Rosalind Russell). Their meeting sparks an immediate romantic attraction, but both are concealing secrets — and the woman disappears as mysteriously as she appeared, leaving the prince intrigued and determined to find her again.
Arriving in London, the restless prince’s search for excitement leads him to a shocking discovery: the existence of the Suicide Club, a clandestine organisation where wealthy, despairing men gather nightly to play cards, with the understanding that the player dealt the ace of spades will be killed by the player dealt the ace of clubs. The club offers its members the thrill of gambling with the ultimate stake — their own lives — and caters to those who have grown so weary of existence that death itself has become an entertainment.
Prince Dorian infiltrates the Suicide Club and discovers that it is run by a sinister figure known as the President (Frank Morgan), whose charming surface conceals genuinely murderous intentions. The prince’s investigation draws him deeper into the organisation’s dangerous web, where he discovers that members are not always participating voluntarily and that the President exploits the club for his own nefarious purposes.
The reappearance of the mysterious woman from the ship complicates matters further, as Dorian discovers that she too is connected to the Suicide Club in ways he did not expect. Romance and danger intertwine as the prince must navigate deadly card games, masked encounters, and elaborate double-crosses to expose the President’s conspiracy, save the woman he loves, and survive the most dangerous gamble of all — risking his life in a game where the house always wins.
