Plot Summary

In the ancient English cathedral town of Cloisterham, John Jasper (Claude Rains) leads a tortured double life. By day he is the respectable choirmaster of the great cathedral, a pillar of the community who dotes lovingly on his young nephew Edwin Drood (David Manners). By night, Jasper descends into the squalid London opium dens, seeking chemical escape from a secret that is consuming his soul: he is desperately, violently in love with Rosa Bud (Heather Angel), the beautiful young woman who is engaged to marry his own nephew.

Edwin and Rosa’s engagement was arranged by their late fathers, and both young people are beginning to realise they feel no romantic love for each other. But before they can break the engagement amicably, the situation is complicated by the arrival of two exotic strangers — Neville Landless (Douglass Montgomery) and his twin sister Helena — who bring intensity and passion into the quiet town’s ordered world. Neville is immediately attracted to Rosa, adding a rival flame to Jasper’s already burning jealousy.

Jasper, his opium-fueled obsession now beyond all reason, secretly plots to eliminate Edwin. On a stormy Christmas Eve, Edwin Drood disappears after dining with Jasper and Neville. Suspicion falls on Neville, who had publicly quarrelled with Edwin, but the detective investigation begins to uncover darker possibilities pointing toward the respectable choirmaster himself. The film provides a dramatic resolution to Dickens’s unfinished story, building to a spectacular climax in the cathedral’s ancient crypt where Jasper’s madness, guilt, and obsession converge in a scene of Gothic horror worthy of the great author who conceived it.

His cathedral organ performance, filmed from below as his face contorts with suppressed violence, is one of the great moments in Gothic horror cinema. Heather Angel is lovely as the endangered Rosa, and Valerie Hobson adds elegant mystery as Helena Landless.
