Plot Summary
Lloyd Tredman, a former U.S. Air Force pilot haunted by a crisis of nerve that ended his flying career, has been drifting through Europe for months, unable to face his wife or return to the life he left behind. Stranded in Madrid with dwindling funds and a crippling loss of self-confidence, Lloyd spends his days drinking in cafes and his nights wrestling with the memories of the combat experience that broke him.
An old friend named Donavon contacts Lloyd with a proposition that seems like a lifeline: a simple smuggling run by plane from Madrid to North Africa, carrying contraband currency across the Mediterranean. The pay is exceptional — enough to solve Lloyd’s financial problems and fund a fresh start — and Donavon assures him that the operation is routine, safe, and virtually risk-free.
Lloyd is torn between his desperate need for money and his instinct that the operation is far more dangerous than Donavon admits. His suspicions are confirmed when he discovers that the previous pilot hired for the job is dead — the “dead jockey” of the title — killed under circumstances that Donavon dismisses as an unrelated accident but that suggest the operation is controlled by ruthless men who eliminate anyone who becomes a liability.
As Lloyd investigates the true nature of the smuggling ring, he discovers connections to international criminal organizations operating in the murky postwar underground economy of Europe. Meanwhile, his wife Phyllis arrives in Madrid, determined to save their marriage and pull Lloyd back from the edge, adding emotional stakes to the physical danger. The film builds toward a dramatic climax as Lloyd must decide whether to go through with the flight or find another way to escape the trap closing around him.

Historical Significance
Tip on a Dead Jockey is based on an Irwin Shaw story and reflects the postwar fascination with expatriate Americans adrift in Europe, struggling with wartime trauma and peacetime aimlessness. The Madrid setting captures a fascinating moment when Franco’s Spain served as a haven for international intrigue, smuggling, and the grey-market operations that thrived in postwar Europe. Robert Taylor, one of MGM’s most enduring leading men, brings his trademark combination of toughness and vulnerability to a character type that resonated with audiences who had lived through the war. Through colorization, this atmospheric thriller is preserved for modern audiences.
