Plot Summary
During World War I on the Western Front, the ambitious and politically calculating French General Mireau is pressured by his superior, the coldly pragmatic General Broulard, into ordering an impossible attack on a heavily fortified German position known as the Anthill. Despite knowing that the assault is virtually suicidal, Mireau agrees when Broulard dangles the promise of a promotion. Colonel Dax, a principled officer and former criminal defense lawyer who commands the regiment tasked with the attack, protests the order but is overruled. He reluctantly leads his men across the cratered wasteland of no man’s land in one of cinema’s most harrowing battle sequences, a nightmare of barbed wire, machine gun fire, and exploding shells.
When the attack inevitably fails with devastating casualties and some soldiers in the second wave refuse to leave their trenches under the murderous enemy fire, General Mireau is enraged and demands that three soldiers be chosen from the ranks and court-martialed for cowardice as an example to the rest of the army. The selection is arbitrary and cruel — one man is chosen by lot, another because his commanding officer dislikes him, and a third because he witnessed an officer’s own act of cowardice. Colonel Dax volunteers to defend the three accused men at their trial, but quickly discovers that the court-martial is a sham, a predetermined exercise designed to protect the generals’ reputations and careers rather than to serve justice. As Dax fights desperately against a military system rigged to sacrifice innocent men for the vanity of their commanders, the film builds to a conclusion of shattering emotional power.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
Paths of Glory was originally filmed in black and white, with Kubrick’s extraordinary tracking shots through the zigzagging trenches creating some of the most powerful and technically innovative imagery in cinema history. This professionally colorized restoration enhances every scene with frame-by-frame precision, from the elegant gilt and marble interiors of the French château headquarters — where generals discuss the lives of thousands over fine wine — to the brown mud, grey smoke, and twisted iron of no man’s land where those men actually die. The colorized version reveals a devastating visual contrast between the opulent warmth of the generals’ world and the cold, churning horror of the front lines. The court-martial sequence gains additional gravity in color, with the pale, exhausted faces of the accused men set against the formal military blues and golds of the tribunal officers. Now also available in colour.

Historical Significance
Released in 1957, Paths of Glory established the young Stanley Kubrick as a major filmmaking talent and remains one of the most powerful antiwar statements in the history of cinema. Based on Humphrey Cobb’s 1935 novel, which drew on documented cases of French soldiers executed for cowardice during World War I, the film’s unflinching portrayal of military injustice was so incendiary that it was banned in France for nearly twenty years — the French government and military establishment considered its depiction of corrupt French generals to be a national insult. Kirk Douglas, who also helped produce the film, delivered one of the finest performances of his extraordinary career as Colonel Dax, combining righteous fury with heartbreaking helplessness as he watches the system destroy innocent men. Adolphe Menjou was chillingly urbane as General Broulard, while George Macready brought sweating desperation to General Mireau. Kubrick’s technical mastery — particularly his legendary tracking shots that follow Dax through the trenches with balletic precision — influenced every war film that followed. Through modern colorization, this landmark film reaches new audiences who can experience its devastating power and understand why it is considered one of the supreme achievements of American cinema.
