Plot Summary

Captain Buck Donavon (Randolph Scott) returns from the frontier with a hard face and a heavy heart. His brother’s cavalry detachment was wiped out in an ambush — not because the soldiers lacked courage, but because the ammunition they carried was defective, manufactured with substandard powder and sold to the Army by a contractor willing to trade soldiers’ lives for profit. Buck has resigned his commission and is heading to Medicine Bend, where the ammunition originated, to bring the responsible parties to justice.

He is accompanied by two comrades from his Army days — Sergeant Maitland (James Craig) and the young, resourceful Brother Abraham (James Garner), whose easy-going manner conceals genuine toughness and sharp intelligence.
