Plot Summary

Oliver Twist is born in a workhouse to a mother who dies moments after his birth, leaving no clue to his identity except a locket she clutched in her final moments. Raised in the brutal parish system, Oliver endures starvation, beatings, and casual cruelty from the very institutions meant to care for him. Sold as an apprentice to the undertaker Mr. Sowerberry, Oliver suffers further abuse until he can bear no more and runs away to London.
