Experience the gripping 49th Parallel (1941) in stunning colorized HD. Directed by Michael Powell and written by Emeric Pressburger, this Academy Award-winning wartime thriller follows the surviving crew members of a German U-boat destroyed in Hudson Bay as they attempt to cross Canada and reach the neutral United States across the 49th parallel — the border between the two nations. Hunted by the Canadian military and encountering a remarkable cross-section of Canadian society along the way — French-Canadian trappers, Hutterite farmers, a cosmopolitan writer, and ordinary working people — the Nazis discover that the democratic values they despise are precisely what makes their prey so formidable. Featuring an extraordinary roster of international stars including Laurence Olivier, Leslie Howard, Raymond Massey, Anton Walbrook, and Eric Portman, this is one of the great propaganda films of World War II — a thriller that argues for democracy by showing it in action. Now available as a premium digital download for just €15.00 — DRM-free and yours to keep forever.

Plot Summary

A German U-boat prowling the waters of Hudson Bay is spotted and destroyed by RCAF bombers, but not before a shore party of six sailors, led by the fanatical Nazi Lieutenant Hirth (Eric Portman), escapes onto Canadian territory. Stranded thousands of miles from any Axis-friendly nation, Hirth determines to lead his men across the vast width of Canada to reach the neutral United States, where they can claim sanctuary.

Their journey becomes an odyssey through the diverse communities that make up the Canadian mosaic. In a remote trading post, they encounter Johnnie, a French-Canadian trapper (Laurence Olivier), whose carefree spirit and love of life represent everything the rigid Nazis cannot comprehend. Among a Hutterite farming community led by the wise Peter (Anton Walbrook), they find a people who fled German oppression generations ago and whose pacifist faith is not weakness but a strength the Nazis cannot break — and Anton Walbrook delivers a devastating speech about what fascism truly means to those who have experienced it.

At a lakeside camp, they meet Philip Armstrong Scott (Leslie Howard), a cultured English writer and painter who seems the epitome of the “decadent” intellectual the Nazis despise — until his quiet courage reveals that civilisation is not softness. Finally, as the surviving Nazis near the American border, they encounter Andy Brock (Raymond Massey), a Canadian soldier on leave, who demonstrates that ordinary democratic men will fight when pushed.

With each encounter, Hirth loses men — to death, to capture, to desertion — as the warm humanity of the Canadians they meet undermines the cold ideology that holds his crew together. The film builds to a tense climax at the border itself, where the meaning of the 49th parallel — the line between freedom and tyranny — becomes devastatingly clear.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

The vast Canadian landscape — the icy blue waters of Hudson Bay, the golden prairie wheat fields of the Hutterite farms, the green forests of Ontario, the autumn colours of the lakeside camp, the snow-capped Rockies near the American border — is breathtakingly enhanced through expert colorization. This is a film that spans an entire continent, and seeing Canada’s extraordinary natural beauty in full colour transforms the viewing experience. The visual contrast between the grey uniformity of the Nazi fugitives and the colourful diversity of the communities they encounter becomes a powerful metaphor for the film’s democratic argument. Now also available in colour. Own this masterful wartime thriller for just €15.00 — where a continent’s width measures the distance between tyranny and freedom.

Historical Significance

49th Parallel was commissioned by the British Ministry of Information to encourage American entry into the war, and it was the first collaboration between Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger — the partnership that would produce some of the greatest films in British cinema history. The film won the Academy Award for Best Original Story and was nominated for Best Picture. Its argument — that democracy’s apparent disorder and diversity are actually its greatest strengths — was revolutionary for wartime propaganda, which typically emphasised unity and conformity. The film launched Eric Portman to stardom, and Laurence Olivier agreed to work for a fraction of his usual fee, knowing the film’s importance. Shot extensively on location across Canada, the film was a significant logistical achievement. Through colorization, this landmark wartime thriller has been preserved for modern audiences.
